As we sit and eat our picnic lunch on Chesterman Beach near Tofino, B.C., were joined by a lone male
Herring Gull (Larus argentatus). He perches on a nearby stump in a nonchalant fashion ... close enough
to beat rivals to a food scrap, but far enough from us for his own safety. He watches us closely, cautiously
ptimistic. Are we possibly the gull-friendly type, sympathetic to his cause? Mark Heine
