Ashley is getting the rare chance to roam at will. She’s a three-year-old twin, daughter of friends with whom we are
vacationing for a few days in the summer of 2008 near Tofino, BC.

Lauren, Ashley’s sister, is up on the beach. (Safe!) But here, where the water never stops moving (Danger!),
Dad is in charge. Ashley, of course, heads straight for the sea, like a juvenile salmon, drawn hypnotically to the
call of the deep. It may be summer, but that water is still very cold, and Dad knows it.   Mark Heine
