This is Mia (right), at age 12, and her cousin Jasmine, 10. They’re friends of my youngest daughter, Sarah,
at the time also 10. We’re spending a hot August day on the beach at Clover Point in Victoria, B.C., in 2008.
The little beach crabs are always too cute to ignore. The kids gather them as pets and relocate them all into
a single tide pool, like horses in a corral. The three girls, working together, gather quite a number of critters.
Their plan is flawless ... until the tide returns. Soon enough, their attentions will turn to collecting hearts.  Mark Heine
