Suggested materials...
|
Photographic subject matter of their choosing, to be used as painting reference. Each student
must e-mail 3 images to Mark, prior to the seminar, for use in the class. Providing quality
photographic material with good lighting is highly recommended. Mark will also make his own
images available for those who prefer not to provide their own.
.
16" X 20" pre-stretched, canvas with base gesso coat. Mark prefer s 1 3/4" deep stretchers.
Student canvas can vary in size. Please, not too big due to space limitation and time restrictions.
Gesso primed canvas boards or wood panels can also be used.
.
Oil palette, brushes, and mixing palettes (I use disposable foam plates). Mark Prefers the
"Mezzo" and "Legatto" brushes available at Opus Art Supplies. They're inexpensive and have the right
spring and touch for Marks approach. In previous seminars Mark has taken note that many
students brushes are too stiff or old. Invest in a new brush or two. It's worth it!
.
White conte pencil or white chalk
.
Oil paint... traditional oil based or water soluble oils. Mark prefers Windsor Newton or Grumbacher.
Van Gough works as well , but is more of a student quality. Don't forget thinners, if working in
traditional oil colours.
.
Suggested colours to have on hand (Windsor Newton)... cadmium yellow pale hue,
cadmium red light, permanent alizarin crimson, dioxazine purple, cobalt blue, cerulean
blue hue, permanent green deep (Van Gough), yellow ochre, raw sienna, burnt
umber, burnt sienna, payne's gray, titanium white.
Students occasionally opt to use traditional acrylic paints instead of oils. In general, it is difficult
to translate Marks approach to painting using acrylics. The acquisition water soluble paints is
strongly recommended.

We hope to see you there!
